Percy Jackson & The Olympians : The Lightning Thief (2010)

A fantastic fun ride for the whole family of an ancient Greek classic with a modern day twist. Percy Jackson & The Olympians : The Lightning Thief is based on the books written by Rick Riordan. It is the story of a young boy who finds out that he is the some of one of the three most powerful gods of Olympus. He is an awkward teen who would rather hide at the bottom of the pool then deal with what is going on around him. At least that is the way that he was till he is accused of stealing the weapon of Zeus (Sean Bean) and Hades (Steve Coogan) snatches his mother to the underworld. It is now up to Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), his junior protector Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson) and his newest friend, the daughter of Athena (Melina Kanakaredes), Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario) to find the weapon and rescue his mother.

This is one film that will make you want to go and read the books that Rick Riordan have crafted for us. He is a masterful story teller and that shows in the characters that we see on the screen. We are shown just how 3 young teens are able to come together and find a way to help those that they care about and love. It doesn’t matter to them who their ‘God’ parents are all they care about is making sure that each one of them comes out of their trials alive. This is also a story and film about discovery and learning how to trust ones self and in ones abilities. Percy is not sure of anything at the start but as he starts to trust in himself and the voice of his father Poseidon (Kevin McKidd) he starts to display a strength that even he friends did not see possible. Each is willing to give everything that they have for the other and that is what makes their friendship that mush stronger.

There were many who said that this film was not of any value and that it should not have been made at all, I feel that way about most Oscar films. Does that make them right about the film not being any good? No it doesn’t. This is a film that teaches you something and it grabs your heart along the way if you will let it. Percy Jackson & The Olympians : The Lightning Thief has more good about it then it has bad but it does have one glaring problem and that is with Annabeth. When she is fighting without a sword in her hand she flows with the grace of water but as soon as she picks of a blade she just looks fake and way too stiff. Percy on the other hand starts not knowing what to do with a sword and grows to be able to use it. A natural progression of learning. I feel that Alexandra Daddario should have had more training before doing any of the sword fight scenes. All her martial skills with an edged weapon are too staged and faked. Once you ignor that fact the film flows evenly and smoothly all the way to the easter egg at the end.

This will be a film that the whole family will be able to site down and enjoy together. It will spark in them a desire to actually know what the different Greek legends are and not just what they might have seen in this and other films. While it is good I am unable to give it top marks because of Ms. Daddario’s martial performance and her Valley Girl better then you attitude. That might be great for a Clueless film but not for what we are being presented here. The casting director should have found someone else to play her part.

I give this film a Musing review of ★★★★☆☆
