I never got to watch the original Dark Shadows back in the day. I was living in Columbus, Ohio, at the time, and WOSU Channel 34 PBS did not pick it up. If it did, it was most likely on at some hour that seven-year-old schoolgirl would not be watching. As I grew older, and learned of the shows that were getting imported to PBS from across the pond, I took an instant liking to Doctor Who. The Tomorrow People left me confused, and Upstairs, Downstairs did the same, even though my mother really liked it. All through the 80s, when I lived in Central Florida, the gothic geeks raved about this show, but I still never got to see it, and now that I’ve seen this Tim Burton version of it, I know there has to something more that what was on this surface of what could only be a parody of the actual show. The film is full of cool looking special effects but the charm and wonder that we saw in the first three films are just not there in this film that takes us back to Halloweentown. Even though all the characters from the first three are mentioned you really don’t see all that much of them and don’t even see Sophie at all, just hear that she is dimension hopping with her grandmother Aggie or Agatha Cromwell as she is knowing in Halloweentown. The movie feels more forced without a normal flow that you would expect from a family movie even one that deals with magic and Halloween. Read more... This is the third movie in the Halloweentown series made especially for the Disney Channel, and since Marnie Piper (Kimberly Brown) opened the portal in Halloween II: Kalabar’s Revenge. In this story, now that the people of Halloweentown have the option not to take the bus to the mortal world only on Halloween, but they can go there at any time, Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds) and Marnie have set up a high school exchange program where students from Halloweentown can learn about the mortal world while at the high school in Marnie’s hometown. Aggie has taken a job at the school as a temporary teacher, and the students can turn to Marnie and Dylan (Joey Zimmerman) for help when they need it. A secret room has been installed at the school behind one of the lockers where the students can change to their true forms when they need to relax and shed their mortal disguises. Read more... Marnie the teenage witch is back again with her family in the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie released for the holiday of Halloween and a continuation of the Holloweentown series. It is now a year later and the young witch has improved her spell casting abilities but still has a lot to learn when it comes to knowing when to trust and when to make sure the family secrets stay secret. The family has now started to celebrate the holiday of Halloween and are having a big party at the house for the first time ever. It seems that the whole neighborhood is there to celebrate before everyone is supposed to go to the costume contest at the high school. This is a real community even and it is also the first time that a boy, another teen has taken an interest in her. She is all a flutter as he charms his way into her heart. Read more...
