There were many great animated films in the 1990s, but this has to be one of the best. Set during the Cold War, at the time of the launch of Sputnik and rampant McCarthyism, there was much for Americans to fear, especially things that came from unknown sources. In the winter of 1957, one great mystery came to a small town in Maine. Where it came from, we do not know, but this hulking robot had the capacity to learn from one young boy, Hogarth Hughes, about life and death, compassion and fear, and so much more.
Hogarth is a pretty self-sufficient kid. His widowed mother works at a local diner as a waitress, and is often asked to work extra shift. His late father was a test pilot in the Air Force, so science is always on Hogarth’s mind, but when a giant robot falls from the sky one night when Hogarth is watching scary movies by himself, he has to go investigate. You might not even remember what it was that made you laugh so much but the song that keeps running through it is going to stick in your head for days. Because it is so random and mindless it is a perfect film to entertain small kids with. It even has a bit of action but nothing to bad that would mess with their heads. Read more... This is the fifth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise of movies, and this storyline is not slowing down any time soon. This story takes place between The Fast and the Furious 2 and Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. This time, we are treated to the exotic locale of Rio de Janeiro, this movie is a far, far cry from the animated family film, Rio, which I reviewed a few weeks ago. This film is pure adrenaline, filled with all kinds of eye candy, both of the human and mechanical kind. All our favourite characters are back, with the exception of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).
