Battleship (2012) The Battle for Earth Begins at Sea

In 2005 we found a world that could sustain life. In 2006 we tried to contact them. In 2012 they came to visit us. That is the basic setup for this film that is based off an old classic game called BATTLESHIP. In the game you are not able to see the opponents board but you both have the same number of assets in play. Each turn the player will select a point on a grid to see if they hit a ship or not. If they do hit they insert a red peg into that point to signify a hit. It takes several pegs to totally sink a battle ship. The movie, while a science fiction film, does follow that premise in how the battles are fought. The big difference is that when a ship is sunk you get to see spectacular explosions that send bits and pieces of ships all over the ocean. They are massive explosions and actually proportional to the rounds and charges that are being used. We even get to see a real battleship from times gone past enter the fight to save the day.

This piece of fictional history follows the never-ending lifetime of most everyone’s favourite X-Man, Wolverine, but in this we meet him first as a 12 year old boy know as James Logan. The year is 1845, and James is being visited by his friend, Victor Creed. This is taking place in the NW Territories of Canada, where James’ father works as a local doctor. As James and Victor are having their visit, they hear shouting and gunshots downstairs. Victor’s father has come over, and he is not calling for Victor, but for James’ mother. After James’ father is shot, he learns that he is Victor’s half-brother, and this leads them down a path working as mercenaries through many wars over the last one hundred fifty years. These are the mutants that will later become Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Sabertooth (Liev Schriber).

The Covenant: Four have the power. One will stop at nothing to possess it.

It has been over three hundred years since the Salem Witch Trials, but that does not stop the Sons of Ipswich from gaining power in their teen years. Over the centuries, four bloodlines of witch families have handed down their power from generation to generation, such is the binding of The Covenant. There was said to have been a fifth line, but it was supposedly lost early on. Now, the newest generation of Sons are closing in on their Ascension, on their eighteenth birthday. They all go to the same school, Spenser Academy, a private school near Gloucester. Two new students have transferred in, a sweet blonde girl, Sarah Wenham (Laura Ramsay) and a mysterious, but upbeat young man, Chase Collins (Sebastian Stan).

John Carter – Lost in Our World. Found in Another.

As a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs I was happy to see this film come out. While everyone went nuts for Tarzan books I always loved the Sci-Fi stories that Burroughs told so his John Carter series was loved by me. I really do not understand why people hated this film so much, it must be all the looking down the barrel game mentality of today. The film really was done well and to me, stay true to the spirit of the fiction that it was based on, A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is always a pleasure to see a film made that follows its source and tries to pay homage to it. This is what I saw in the film John Carter.
