Kernelkling (kur nuhl’ kling) – n. The shell of a kernel in a bowl or bag of popcorn that seems spot-welded to the roof of one’s mouth, and cannot be removed without the making of cat-like hissing noises in an attempt to lessen the suction of said kernel.
Okay, popcorn lovers, this one is for you, or really for anyone who has had this experience with popcorn kernels. You know how those little shells can just catch on to anything in your mouth, from your gumline, to the palate, even the back of your throat. It takes some talented tongue maneuvering to get those nasty things out. There really is no careful way to eat popcorn. Even if you take in one popped kernel at a time, some will still hit the floor, or a rogue kernel will attempt to latch itself in your mouth somehow. Don’t give up on eating popcorn, as it is low calorie, high in fiber, as far as snack foods go, if made properly better for you than chips or sweets. There might be some risk in trying to avoid getting a kernelkling, but when it comes to kernelklings, they are just part of the territory.
