Table Snorkeling (tay’ bul snawrk’ ling) – n. Frantic gesticulations when one bites into hot food and has to take in air to cool it off.
You never know when it will happen, or what will cause it, but you just hope it won’t happen to you, because then you will be the one who looks like a blithering idiot when it happens. It can happen with piping hot pizza, some cheese-based casseroles, or any kind of entree’ that tends to retain its heat very well. Sometimes it happens with spicy foods, too, but that is a different kind of heat. We’ve all seen it. Someone digs into whatever tasty treat is set before them that has come right out of the oven. Ouch, too hot! Their eyes sort of bulge, their mouth and cheeks kind of suck in, and they are gasping for air and waving their hands about, and sometimes even stamping their feet. These wild movements should serve as a warning sign to those dining with them. The food is far too hot! Slow down before digging in, or risk a scorched mouth! Table Snorkeling is also commonly seen when someone takes in a shot of a very strong, and not too smooth hard liquor of any kind, but you still get to see the same results.
