Percy-Jackson-Sea-of-Monsters-2013-DVD-CoverWhen Rick Riordan says everything old is new again, he really means it. He has taken ancient myth and legend and combined it with post-modern society and brought us the Percy Jackson series of books. This second film from the series is a wonderful take on the second book of the series. I do hope this film franchise keeps running! We are once again brought into the story by the dream team of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), a son of Posiden, Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), and their satyr guide, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson). Annabeth relives her past in a short tale of woe for another child of the most powerful of the Greek Gods, Zeus. As children trying to reach the protective camp, Annabeth, Grover, Luke, and another girl, Talia, were being chased by two cyclops. In the pursuit, Talia tried to stop the cyclops to let the other kids get away, but was defeated. Talia was a child of Zeus, and everyone thought she was killed, but there was a very faint life force left in her, and Zeus used this to create a new life for Talia, as a tree protecting the camp, just as Talia did for her young friends. Also, because of this incident, Annabeth developed a hatred for cyclops.

Captain America: The First Avenger

This was the last movie in a chain of prequels leading up to this summer season’s first blockbuster, The Avengers. It seems appropriate that The First Avenger would be the last to be brought into play. What is really amazing about this particular Marvel film is that critics just never seemed to get enough of it, and after watching it a few times now, I can completely agree with them.

It seems we can’t go a few months these days without seeing a trailer for some comic book-based movie. From the standards of Marvel or DC, to lesser known houses, like Dark Horse, or various manga outlets, like Shojo or Tokyopop, we are constantly seeing our heroes come to life in live or computer-animated action. Some people might even be lucky enough to see these 2D stories in vivid real 3D, not only in movies, but in video games as well. So, we go from there, 2012 back to there, where it all started, in New York, 1942, and learn about the story of a small man with big dreams that made them come true with some good faith, brave deeds, and lots of secret government funding.

Robots : You can shine no matter what you’re made of.

This movie about a young dreamer from a small town is fun and inspiring, as well as cute and funny. It’s the perfect formula for a family film, even if all the characters are Robots.

The movie opens in Rivet Town, where Herb Copperbottom (Stanley Tucci) is dancing through the streets on his way home from work because he is expecting a huge delivery. When Mrs. Copperbottom (Dianne Weist) tells him he missed the delivery, but that making the baby is the best part, they start building something that is going to change their lives and many other lives in ways they never knew possible. What they build is Rodney Copperbottom, a young idealist with a knack for inventing. His idol is Big Weld (Mel Brooks), an entrepreneur who won’t turn down anyone who submits an invention to him, because he believes in progress, and that there are too many needs going unfulfilled in his city. His motto is “See a need, fill a need.” Rodney keeps this thought with him as he grows up. When graduation arrives, Rodney wants to leave Rivet Town. Rodney (Ewan MacGregor) knows that he can invent great things to help his family, and since his idol, Big Weld, has never turned anyone down, he is going to Robot City to show Big Weld one of his inventions, and make his mark in the industry.

The Core (2003)

The Core Poster“It’s the end of the world as we know it….” R.E.M. sang those words in the best decade for music ever, but little did they know that there would be many, many movies based on that phrase for decades to come, and this is one of them. There are many unstable biological and geological things happening, such as birds flying in suicidal patterns in England, and other parts of the world. Bizarre lightening storms that can take out ancient cities, people dropping dead in parts of metro areas for no reason, but it seems that the government thinks that Dr. Josh Keyes and his colleague, a weapons specialist we only know as Serge, has the answers. Once the D.O.D. learns that what has caused these instances is nature and not an act of war, they let the two men go, but Dr. Keyes thinks there is more to it. After doing some more research in his own lab, he learns that the Earth’s electromagnetic field is out of whack, and when people start seeing auroras as far south as Paris and Washington D.C., it is time to look further into what is going on. Guess what! The Earth’s outer core, the molten metal that keeps the planet’s electromagnetic field in check is broken.
