Zibula (ZI bew luh) – n. The plastic spine which model car parts come attached to.
While I’m not one to build models, Cleave is, so he has encountered the zibula many times over the years. It must be pretty interesting to see the molds they use when putting all those parts on the zibula, but that is not for our eyes to see. We just hope that all the parts are there, and we might enjoy our model-building time by inhaling the vapors of glue and paints, then wondering why the models never look like they do on the box when we get done. Might have something to do with the fumes from the glue and the paints. Zibulas come in many colours, but I’m guessing the most common is black for all those interiors, maybe grey for those spaceship models we never see any more, but some devoted middle-aged Star Wars/Star Trek geeks might have stashed in their homes somewhere to work on when they retire. Where do discarded zibulas end up? Most likely in the workshop/bedroom trash bin, or it becomes a toy for a lucky cat. Zibulas are here to stay so long as we are going to build models, and as long as there plastic molds to be filled with parts for your mini version of a 1965 Ford Mustang.
