Noah-2014-Movie-PosterWe all know the story of Noah, at least any and all that have even heard about the bible. Even those that have not know many of the great flood stories that are all around the world. They all have a very common theme of a man, his wife and a few children saving the world from massive flood waters. How do they save the world? They save it by building an ark for themselves and all the animals that they can find so that something will remain. This version of Noah is no different except it has biblical threads woven in and around it. That is what makes it so controversial, it is based on the biblical story.

Man Of Steel – An Ideal To Strive For

Man-Of-Steel-2013-Movie-PosterI was rather impressed by Man of Steel. Even though it was a Zack Snyder film, which tend to be very monochromatic and strange, this was no Sucker Punch or The Watchmen. I liked that we get more insight on the history of the destruction of Krypton, and how its demise led to Kal-El’s journey. We also saw more interaction with his adoptive parents, the Kents of Smallville, particularly Martha Kent (Diane Lane).

So let’s go back to Krypton, and learn a bit more about how Jor-El (Russell Crowe) attempted to save his dying people, and how those in power led to its downfall. Like the dwarves in the Mines of Moria, the leader had their workers dig too deep searching for an energy source. The people of Krypton were a population of clones made from the days when the world was clean and natural. Unlike the dwarves, they did not unleash a demon, but something far more foul. The breached the core of their planet, and now it is on the brink of imploding. Jor-El and his wife, Lara Von-An (Ayelet Zurer) have worked against the council and have created the last natural borne Kryptonian in their son, Kal-El. General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his followers is wanting to take over the planet against the wishes of the council.

The year is circa 180 C.E., and Rome is still expanding. General Maximus (Russell Crowe) is securing Germania in the name of the Roman Empire, and Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) himself is here to cheer on his legions. The aging emperor is feeling his last days upon him, and has decided to give the rule of Rome over to his most trusted friend and general. Maximus wants nothing more than to go back to his farm in Spain and retire from military life. He wants to spend the rest of his days with his wife and son, but Fate, and some scheming nobles from Rome are going to change his plans drastically. Emperor Marcus has has his children to join him at this battlefield in these “barbaric” lands. Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and Lucilla (Connie Neilsen) have come to Germania by their father’s bidding. Commodus and Lucilla, though related through blood, cannot be any more different than night and day. Commodus is a bit too ambitious, greedy, and not able to see what might become his soon, that being the rule of Rome. As Marcus Aurelius says, “Commodus is not a moral man.” Lucilla would most likely been named Caesar but for the fact that she cannot be heir due to her sex. She is strong, for her family and for Rome, and wants to see the corruption in the forum ended, and the Republic put back where to how it was before the line of scheming and murdering intrigues took over what was supposed to be the highest office in the land.

Mystery Alaska (1999) It’s All About Hockey

Mystery Alaska is an often overlooked film that is of tremendous quality staring Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds and Hank Azaria. The film is full of compassion, adultery, comedy, loose women, pride, civic duty and extreme love for each other. It is a movie about a hockey team in a small town in norther Alaska that has been playing a Saturday game for years on end. They play against members of the town and the town elders pick who will be on the teams. This time things are changing, the ice they play on is changing, the rules they play by are changing and they are going to be playing the New York Rangers, a professional hockey team. This one game has the potential to destroy the lives of the whole town.
