This is the fifth installment of the Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) movie franchise based on the book by the same name. In this movie, we watch as things are just getting darker and darker for our young hero. Summer is bleak and dry and very hot, too hot for Little Whinging in Surrey. This is where Dudley (Harry Melling) realizes just how hard things are for his wizarding cousin when the boys are attacked by Dementors, the black, hooded guards of Azkaban Prison that feed on everything positive from their victims, leaving them with cold sadness. As the attack happens, Harry does an Patronus spell to bring out the protector spirit that will repel the Dementors. The spell is successful, but one muggle other than Dudley sees it, but this muggle is actually a squibb, Mrs. Figg (Kathryn Hunter), Harry’s old babysitter. Read more... This magical epic is the fourth in the series based on the books by J.K. Rowling. This is also the pivotal year in which Lord Voldemort is no longer hiding with in the bodies of his followers or in the pages of a lost diary. He has grown stronger, and needs just one perfect spell to bring him back, and Harry is the catalyst to make it work.
We are lucky enough not to have dealings with the Dursleys in this film, as we go from the scene at the old Riddle manor house where we see Wormtail (Timothy Spall) and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) conspiring with an unknown ally. Nagini, Voldemort’s familiar, portrayed as a Burmese Python, but a magical pairing, as she has fangs and venom where true pythons do not, works as a sentry for the Dark Lord and his crew, and spies the old caretaker, Frank Bryce (Eric Sykes), but the old man knows to much and meets his end with a killing curse from a phoenix feather-powered wand. It is hard to believe it has been nearly a decade since many family herded their kids into the car and headed down to the local cinemas to see this first installment of the Harry Potter movies. The main players, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Gint), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and their first magical rival, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) were all just pre-teens then, dealing with things they never dreamed of. Some were ready for the challenge, growing up with, or researching what was coming to them. Harry was the most un-prepared, yet the most powerful of them all. We saw glimpse of Harry’s miserable home life with the Dursleys. Vernon Dursley (Richard Griffiths), who is perpetually in denial about magic. His wife, Petunia (Fiona Shaw), who knows that it does exists, but would rather not deal with it, and supports Vernon fully. That leaves Dudley (Harry Melling), whom is a male version of Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A beefy brat that is so spoiled, that if he was a carton of milk the expiration date on him would have been 322 B.C.E. Read more... (749 words, 95 images, estimated 3:0 mins reading time)
This is the second movie in the epic series based off the J.K. Rowling book series of the same name. We again meet with the familiar characters that took the world by storm in 1997 with the release of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In this story, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) starts out upset that he has not heard from any of his friends over the summer, and the Dursleys won’t even let him release Hedwig from her cage for fear that he might send letters to them. During an evening dinner party in which Uncle Vernon (Richard Griffiths) is hoping to impress a big client from work, Harry is sent to his room to keep from interrupting Uncle Vernon’s attempt to impress Mr. and Mrs. Mason (Jim Norton, Veronica Clifford), Dobby (voice actor Toby Jones), the house elf comes to visit Harry by just popping into his bedroom. Dobby has come to warn Harry not to go back to Hogwart’s. Harry refuses, because Hogwart’s is more of a home to him than this oppressive home in Little Whinging has ever been. Dobby is pretty much a slave to the family he serves, and every time he says something that might be offensive to them, even if they cannot hear it, he feels he must punish himself. After making much noise by banging his head on a wall, and smacking a lamp against his head, he gets away from Harry, and threatens to drop a beautifully decorated cake on top of Mrs. Mason’s head if Harry does not agree to stay home. Harry says no, and the cake goes all over Mrs. Mason. Uncle Vernon is, as usual very angry, and to make sure Harry does not get away to go back to school, he puts bars up on Harry’s bedroom window. Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is entering his sixth year at Hogwart’s Academy for Witchcraft and Wizardy, and new plans are set in motion as the Dark Lord, Voldemort sends the newest Deatheater, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton of The Borrowers), to get rid of the biggest obstacle that keeps him from taking down Harry. The obstacle is Professor Albus Dumbledore (Micheal Gambon). One night, at a trainstop cafe in Little Winging, Harry makes a date with a lovely dark and exotic young lady, but is taken away by Dumbledore to meet up with a former instructor from Hogwarts, Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent of The Borrowers). With some searching, they find Slughorn hiding out in a trashed muggle home disguised as a recliner. The Deatheaters are looking for Slughorn because he has information that might be Voldemort’s undoing. Dumbledore promises him the protection of Hogwarts, and Slughorn is taken on as the new potions instructor. Read more... (689 words, 139 images, estimated 2:45 mins reading time)
