Word games are uncommon for me to review, but I do like them, and I liked the idea of combining the exotic art of haiku into a Boggle/Hangman-style word puzzle game. In Haiku Journey, you work your way through the ancient capitol of Kyoto towards Mt. Fuji, you take on several different grids made from paper lanterns with letters on them. Every time you find a word, that knocks some letters off the grid and they are replaced by others. Some of these letters are highlighted and show up in the mystery haiku on the screen. You can solve the haiku early to gain bonus points, or play it out. Haiku Journey can be a little confusing, as it is somewhat difficult to know exactly when a new level starts and ends, because when you solve a haiku, that level is not necessarily over. The graphics are very colourful and serene, done in a classic Japanese style with soft colours, and the music light enough not to be distracting. If you like word puzzles, Haiku Journey is just perfect for you, but I found it needed a little more upbeat spark for make it more fun for me. I guess I’m more of a marble-popping player.
