If you love Greek Mythology and want to see a film about it a la 300 style then you will love this film. If you hated 300 with a passion you MIGHT be able to tolerate this film. Just like 300, by the way this film was done by the same person that did 300, this film is all in black and gold as it it would make the story any better. What is wrong with having some color in a film? If I wanted all black and gold I would watch some old classic 50’s or 60’s film on Greek Mythology and frankly, it would be a better film. If I want to see stop motion photography I would watch a classic film that actually used it instead of a computer enhanced version. This is one of the more interesting renditions of a classic tale that has been told so far. So what if it has flying ships and the fantastical works of Leonardo De Vinci and starts in Venice instead of France. It is a fun film to watch with some of the actors and actresses that we have come to love, playing characters that we wouldn’t expect them to play. You really wont care if your favorite is playing the bad guy or the bad girl, they are great in just about any film that they show up in.
It is a time of unrest where a young inexperienced King Louis XIII of France (Freddie Fox) is ruling a vast empire with his arranged bride Queen Anne (Juno Temple) who he doesn’t even know how to talk to. With no concept of leadership he has to rely on the guidance and advice from that of Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz). Richelieu takes full advantage of this and makes sure his guard and not the Musketeers are in charge of security. He wants nothing to get in the way of him ruling in the King’s and Queen’s place.
