This early 90s picture was made during the waning days of the Cold War, but it is set in a time when we were still on high alert. In 1984, the Soviet Union was still very strong, and nuclear subs on both sides of the world had to power to level cities. This is based on one of the very successful books in the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series. In this story, Jack (Alec Baldwin) is working for the CIA as a consultant as his wife (Gates McFadden) works through her residency in London. At this time, a new wold has been put to sea out of Polijarny Inlet, and she is the Red October. Her captain is Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), and he has an agenda. it is up to Jack Ryan to find out what an old sea dog like Ramius could be up to with that much nuclear power in his hands, and why the best of the Soviet Fleet has been sent out of Leningrad and other major ports in the nation to hunt down this amazing sub with a magnetohydrodynamic drive that makes it run virtually silent.

Patriot Games : All For His Wife And Child

Based on the book from Tom Clancy, Patriot Games, this film is a solid hit in the action and intrigue department. We have all the right players to give audiences a ride that they are likely never to forget. You have international players with terrorists from the IRA and members of the CIA who Jack Ryan used to work for. It is evident early on what you are going to see happen in the film, it might even be telegraphed for you but you are not going to care. You are going to want to see how this one ends and will be on the edge of your seat no matter how many time you might watch it. Director Phillip Noyce and screenplay writers have done a good job translating the story to the screen even though several elements were changed from that of the book.

Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) is working as one of the chief analysts for the CIA and the friend and go to guy for Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones). During a briefing at the White House, Jack has to present the findings that he and his team uncovered about a hijacking of a yacht off the coast of the United States. The Coast Guard went after the ship when it began behaving suspiciously and discovered its stateroom filled with blood and the people on board covered in the same blood. What Jack and his analysts found out later is that the owner, a senator and friend of the President of the United State, had been laundering money for one of the Columbia drug cartels and a hit was done because the same senator had been skimming the take to the tune of 650 million dollars and change. During the meeting about the scene on the yacht it seemed that Admiral Greer had indigestion and might be a bit fluish. The President and Greer asked Ryan to look into the mater further and report his findings as soon as possible.

Review: Conan the Barbarian

Conan The BarbarianConan the Barbarian is based on the book by Robert E. Howard of the same title name. It is about how one of the last descendants of Atlantis makes a name for himself. With a new release of the film slated for 2011 staring Jason Momoa as conan I figured it would be a good time to review some of the older films of this series. You might know Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex from Stargate Atlantis. In the 1982 film Conan is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger the now governor of California, at least at the time of writing this.
