Smellucination (smel-loo-suh-ney-shuhn) n. Thinking you smell something you really don’t.
This is that time of the year when there are lots of odd smells in the air, of cooking, of leaf and/or wood burning. If you live near the woods and it’s hunting season, you might get hit with all kinds of smells. If you live near the coast, it can happen there, too. Sometimes the smells are good, like bread baking or shrimp boiling, or even steaks grilling. Most times, a smellucination tends to not be so nice. It could be a metallic burn when you are in the car, and you are hoping that it isn’t coming from yours, or that odd odour from the woods in which you know there has to be a dead animal in there somewhere, and you really wish the buzzards would come take care of it. It could even happen at the mall, that place with its olfactory overload, from the scent of new clothes and expensive perfumes, to electronics, to the multi-ethnic varieties of munchies at the food court. With all this stuff going on with our noses, it is no small wonder that we experience smellucinations from time to time. Just remember where you are, and when it is, and you should be just fine, and if that odd metallic smell from the car doesn’t go away, check your engine, duh!
