We’ve seen these little metal parts pop off of any of the many-geared inventions of Phineas Phogg or Artemus Gordon whenever the steam pressure got too hot. These are the hudnuts, the nuts, screws, or bolts that hold it all together, but somehow, always manage to fall out, or in the case in many a steampunk adventure, pop out. Our wonderful 19th and early 20th century inventors are usually at a loss for what went wrong with their steam-powered gadgets, when it turns out there is a hudnut around. They are often stumped when they do find it, and their biggest query at the time is, “Now, how did that get there?” And as usual, truth mirrors fiction in that this sort of thing happens to many of us all the time.
