Airdirt (ayr’ dirt) – n. A hanging plant that’s been ignored for three weeks or more.
So how many of you have some airdirt in your house? There are most likely quite a few of us out there, those with thumbs that are just about any colour but green. That fern in the kitchen that was lovingly given to you by an eco-friendly friend or relative. How foolish they must have been to leave this living thing with you, knowing its fate was to become airdirt. That macrame’ hanger that was tied with hemp fibers is holding your poor, dried-up fern from its final destination into the trash bin.
Maybe the airdirt is not been neglected completely. Such a plant could be a home for bugs or spiders, or maybe even a colony of tiny dust bunnies. Maybe the person whom decided not to water it is doing an experiment to see how long it takes a plant to dry-rot itself completely to the cellular level. The plant is now airdirt, no matter what the cause, and it won’t be coming back, except in the form of bug droppings. So, lose that plant, cut it down from its macrame’ bindings, and let it go back the earth it came from.
