The Great Chocolate Chase

FunFactor: ★★☆☆☆

The Great Chocolate Chase is the fourth game in the Chocolatier series, but this game goes back to the beginning and it is not longer a business simulation. This time management game is very similar to the Cake Mania, but the person in charge of running the stores you build in remote places is the Baumeister matron, Evangeline Baumeister. It’s 1904, 16 years after the initial game. She has some steam-powered inventions created by Klaus Werner to get decadent chocolatey goodness to the mass in far flung places like the Jungles of Peru, or a whaling station on islands just north of Antarctica. The new settings are great, and the steampunky machines work well, but this seemed more like putting a new face on another game, and it was just not the Chocolatier game I had gotten used to. Game play was not smooth, and even though you got upgrades along the way to speed things up, the customers demands were not all that bad, but their patience levels were. Why would I want to play a game with these kinds of characters? I get enough of that in my day to day life.

Chocolatier: Decadence by Design

Chocolatier: Decadence by Design takes us to the post-war era, and Alex has left the Baumeister business in your hands. Now, the company has moved to Zurich, and Alex is on a mission. It has nothing to do with chocolates, but to find her husband who as become MIA. The other family members will send you to new locales to gain ingredients for a new kind of decadent treat. Rich and lustrous coffee drinks, at the beginning of the coffeehouse era. From the rich bean fields of Kona, Hawaii, to the streets of Havana, Cuba, where dulce de leche is a daily treat. The interface of this Chocolatier game is more streamlined, and huge. Your testing lab has moved from Argentina to Iceland, and you have even more special products you can offer, and you can even name your own products and choose how they will look. While making chocolates in this game runs with pretty much the same setup as the original game, creating the coffees incorporates a Match 3 style play, and it was a little difficult to figure out exactly what was going on there the first time around. All of the Chocolatier games are great ways to while away the hours in a business simulation, and this one is set in a time when the world’s economy is booming and such luxurious foods were in demand by just about anyone who knew about them. Enjoy this Golden Age sim with a demitasse and biscotti. Here’s hoping we see another Chocolatier game in another decade soon.
