Return to Halloweentown

The film is full of cool looking special effects but the charm and wonder that we saw in the first three films are just not there in this film that takes us back to Halloweentown. Even though all the characters from the first three are mentioned you really don’t see all that much of them and don’t even see Sophie at all, just hear that she is dimension hopping with her grandmother Aggie or Agatha Cromwell as she is knowing in Halloweentown. The movie feels more forced without a normal flow that you would expect from a family movie even one that deals with magic and Halloween.

This is the third movie in the Halloweentown series made especially for the Disney Channel, and since Marnie Piper (Kimberly Brown) opened the portal in Halloween II: Kalabar’s Revenge. In this story, now that the people of Halloweentown have the option not to take the bus to the mortal world only on Halloween, but they can go there at any time, Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds) and Marnie have set up a high school exchange program where students from Halloweentown can learn about the mortal world while at the high school in Marnie’s hometown. Aggie has taken a job at the school as a temporary teacher, and the students can turn to Marnie and Dylan (Joey Zimmerman) for help when they need it. A secret room has been installed at the school behind one of the lockers where the students can change to their true forms when they need to relax and shed their mortal disguises.

Marnie the teenage witch is back again with her family in the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie released for the holiday of Halloween and a continuation of the Holloweentown series. It is now a year later and the young witch has improved her spell casting abilities but still has a lot to learn when it comes to knowing when to trust and when to make sure the family secrets stay secret. The family has now started to celebrate the holiday of Halloween and are having a big party at the house for the first time ever. It seems that the whole neighborhood is there to celebrate before everyone is supposed to go to the costume contest at the high school. This is a real community even and it is also the first time that a boy, another teen has taken an interest in her. She is all a flutter as he charms his way into her heart.

Halloweentown: I’m getting that deja vu feeling again!

This movie has become an October tradition at The Disney Channel, and has spawned four sequels, and each one is just as fresh and original as the one that started it all. Debbie Reynolds stars as Aggie Cromwell, a very powerful witch from Halloweentown. Her family lives in the mortal world. Her daughter, Gwen Cromwell Piper (Judith Hoag), granddaughters Marnie (Kimberly Brown) and Sophie (Emily Roeske) and grandson Dylan (Joey Zimmerman). Gwen will let the kids have nothing to do with Halloween or anything with the occult. The family is not right-wing religious, so when Grandma comes to visit and starts a little Pagan party at the house complete with pentacles and costumes, we know something is up with the family. It turns out that the whole of the family has suppressed their magical abilities due to Gwen’s determination to protect them from the evils of Halloweentown. Halloweentown is in another world made up of witches, werewolves, vampires, demons, devils, and other dark creatures. They all live together in harmony, and have nothing to fear from the fear of mortals attempting to destroy them as they attempt to during the Middle Ages. After dinner, Aggie tells them a story about Halloweentown, and Dylan, being the family’s science nerd, says she is making the whole thing up, until Aggie pulls out a book, and there is a likeness of Marnie dressed as a witch happily flying over the town on a broomstick. Dylan is not only a nerd, but a green idealist, making some viewers wonder if he could possibly be not a male witch, but instead, a druid.
