The Three Musketeers (2011)

This is one of the more interesting renditions of a classic tale that has been told so far. So what if it has flying ships and the fantastical works of Leonardo De Vinci and starts in Venice instead of France. It is a fun film to watch with some of the actors and actresses that we have come to love, playing characters that we wouldn’t expect them to play. You really wont care if your favorite is playing the bad guy or the bad girl, they are great in just about any film that they show up in.

It is a time of unrest where a young inexperienced King Louis XIII of France (Freddie Fox) is ruling a vast empire with his arranged bride Queen Anne (Juno Temple) who he doesn’t even know how to talk to. With no concept of leadership he has to rely on the guidance and advice from that of Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz). Richelieu takes full advantage of this and makes sure his guard and not the Musketeers are in charge of security. He wants nothing to get in the way of him ruling in the King’s and Queen’s place. He just has a few problems to get rid of first.

The Three Musketeers: All for one and one for all!

This 1993 epic based on the Alexander Dumas novel of the same title is a fun, swashbuckling adventure featuring some of the better known talents of the time. it pretty much follows the Dumas storyline, but the talents of the players make it come to life even more so. It is a cast of characters suited well to the parts, and there is some fun comic relief that comes from most everyone. Most everyone knows how the story goes, but with the addition of a slight backstory on D’Artagnan at the beginning of the story, the pursuit of one family to avenge their sister’s honour goes on throughout the film, and the chase never really seems to end.

The HdO brand of games is a great resource for taking classic books and bringing them to the hidden object mystery format, yet the stories are really never too dark, and follow the books fairly well. Such is the case with The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan and the 12 Jewels . This game follows the trail of D’Artagnan as he heads to Paris to join the King’s Guard and become a musketeer like his father before him. The young man is quick with both blade and wit, and often finds himself running into problems that tend to be settled by dueling. He also tends to find himself in the fleeting company of the king’s enemies from time to time as he learns more about the corruption on the part of Cardinal Richelieu and his Machiavellian style of intrigue as he plans to take over the rule of France.
