Dark Shadows : Every Family Has Its Demons

Dark-Shadows-2012-Blu-Ray-CoverI never got to watch the original Dark Shadows back in the day. I was living in Columbus, Ohio, at the time, and WOSU Channel 34 PBS did not pick it up. If it did, it was most likely on at some hour that seven-year-old schoolgirl would not be watching. As I grew older, and learned of the shows that were getting imported to PBS from across the pond, I took an instant liking to Doctor Who. The Tomorrow People left me confused, and Upstairs, Downstairs did the same, even though my mother really liked it. All through the 80s, when I lived in Central Florida, the gothic geeks raved about this show, but I still never got to see it, and now that I’ve seen this Tim Burton version of it, I know there has to something more that what was on this surface of what could only be a parody of the actual show. I’ve watched my share of British TV shows, and this one was very Americanized for the big screen.

Spelling games are out there to challenge us, and make for great TV ratings, as in games like Wheel of Fortune. Well, even though the big wheel has been spinning for decades, Spellagories most likely won’t be nearly as popular. You are set in a medieval town that has been cursed by an evil mage, and you have to break his spell using sigils that will come to you by breaking the curse on individuals that pass by the lab. To break the curse, you find words within scrambled letter that match the category listed above the puzzle. You can actually type the guessed words in, which really speeds the game up.

Just My Luck

This 2006 movie was cute and savvy, and most likely one of the last movies we will see Miss Lindsay Lohan in for a very long time. This was from the time before she met with those things in Hollywood that turn regular good actors and actresses into chemically-enhanced tabloid fodder. This is not the story of Miss Lohan, but of Ashley Albright (Lindsay Lohan) and Jake Hardin (Chris Pine). Two Mahattanites whom have been both blessed and cursed by the Fates. Ashley is an executive at a PR firm, and is just about the luckiest woman to ever have existed. She’s the kind of person who steps in gum, only to have a $20 bill attached to it. She can always get a taxi just by waving, and her designer duds never, ever get splashed by puddles after a rainstorm. She may seem high-maintenance, but with all the wonderful things that happen to her, life itself maintains her.
