busblender (BUS blen dur) – v. The device at the front of the bus that tosses your fare around for awhile, then swallows it.
I haven’t had to ride a public bus in a very long time, not since the 1980s, but I do remember the busblender back then. It had a happy, chinking kind of sound as it collected everyone’s quarters along the route and tossed that change around in it. As I live in a small town now, we don’t have a town bus or trolley to take us out and about, so busblenders are a thing of the past to me. I wonder if they might still be around, or do public transit riders just scan their debit cards as they board the buses? Do buses still take change, or are the fares so high now that only dollars will do? Those of us living out in small towns and in the country might not have to deal busblenders any more, and i am one of them. Can someone tell me if they still exist, and do they still work the same way?
