Tunar – n. the instinctual power a cat has to sense when a can of tuna has been open within 100 yards of them.
Got a craving for a tuna sandwich? Well get that bread toasted quick and slap down some mayo, because as soon as you open that little can of Starkist or Bumblebee, every cat in the neighborhood will know what you are up to. Not only that, they will want to help you with your sandwich making and consuming efforts. That’s how tunar works. They can hear an electric can opener, but if it isn’t tuna, they will do what cats normally do. Sleep, torment dogs, chase squirrels, or attempt to grab lunch from a blue jay’s nest. Cats know that sooner or later, someone close by will crack open a can of tuna, whether it be a tiny lunch size one, or a big bulk size can that can feed a class of preschoolers very nicely. I’m not sure if big cats or prehistoric cats might have a version of tunar, but that might have made things very interesting for Fred and Wilma Flintstone back in the day of One Million B.C. I guess a saber-tooth tiger would have to take a bulk size can, considering how much tunar power it might have. As for modern day cats, their tunar is very strong, and the next time you open a can of tuna, you will see exactly why.
