Barbarella (1968) Who Nearly Dies of Pleasure?

Barbarella-1968-Movie-PosterAs the saying goes, “I don’t usually drink beer, but when I do, I choose….” The same can be said with Musing movies reviews. We don’t normally review every bad movie we see, but when we do, watch the sparks fly. Good examples are 2012: Supernova and Piranha. We welcome Barbarella to the list of movies to avoid, even if it was made during the very campy late 1960s. This is cheesy sci-fi at its pinnacle, with spaceship interiors made of shag carpeting, set designs featuring psychedelic images and clear Plexiglas furniture. The only good thing to come out of this mess was the new romantic band Duran Duran, but they would not see their highest success until almost twenty years later.

Jane Fonda plays the lead as the space explorer, Barbarella. She comes from an Earth that is full of the peace and love of the hippie culture, but none of the sexiness that came with it. Considering all the erotic fashion designs Paco Rabanne put her in, it was rather hard to believe how quickly this lady went from virgin to ‘ho.
