Keyfruit (kee’ froot) – n. The one apple, pear, or tomato in the stand that, when removed, causes all the others to tumble forward.
It’s the Great Pyramid of…. Produce? We’ve all seen them in the supermarket, stacked so neatly and smelling so good, just waiting for us to buy some, but how do you which piece of fruit is going to cause a sticky avalanchne when it’s pulled? Usually, at least in some movies, it is not the adult shoppers, but their kids who know exactly which piece to go after. Since they are short, most likely the keyfruit will be on the bottom, but then, we never really know which part of the pyramid will become susceptible to gravity problems. You get this kind of action going on a a Farmer’s Market, then who knows what could happen. There is no courtesy clerk to “Clean Up in Produce!” there, but get enough shoppers pulling a keyfruit at the same time, and you got a comedy of errors no Hollywood writer could have dreamed up, but I don’t think this kind of cacophony would make to Fox News, maybe to one of the Jeannie Most segments of HNN. So be careful when you pull that pear, and watch out with those peaches, because if you pull the keyfruit, your produce pyramid could come crashing down like an Acme machine in the hands of Wile E. Coyote.
