Eventitis (event-eye-tes) – The feeling or state of mind that you are in after going nonstop away from home for several days.
You see this a lot with groups like the SCA and with people that do Medieval Fairs and fantasy festivals. You even see it with regular event goers and business people that travel a lot, especially if they spend a lot of time outside. It is that feeling of complete lethargy and tiredness that you just can not explain. It is even worse if you are camping in an area that has many fires going and lots of libations that are free flowing. For several days you are in it even when it rains or snows. Usually you have rain one day and then a scorching sun the next to really make the mugginess set in. At the time you are not paying much attention to it but when you finally get home it hits you hard the next day. Even worse if there were a lot of fires.
The next day you wake up bleary eyed with your nose full of soot that takes for ever to come out. Some of it looks like you have been mining coal right out of your nose. Your body feels like you have run a marathon and your stomach is all queasy from all of the odd foods and multiple kinds of drinks that you have had. Its not a hangover it is eventitis and you can get it even if you don’t drink the funny looking blue and florescent green fluids that were available to drink. It is just one of those things that happens right after you relax and sleep.
You tell yourself “Never again…” but you always will. It is the price you pay for the fun or work that you did away from home and the comforts of your daily routine but a few days later you will look forward to doing it all over again.
At least now you have a name for that whacked out feeling you have after your trip, it is not the flue or a cold it is just your body giving you a strong bout of Eventitis. May not be a medical term but maybe it should.
