CHAIN GANG WALK (chayn gang wok) n. Activity observed in the footwear section of cheap department stores where the shoes are wired together “for your convenience.”
Why does it have to be so hard to get a pair of cheap summer shoes? But there they are, the flip-flops, slides, sandals, aquasox, and canvas sneakers, all hung up! on a metal mesh wall by hooks, and good luck trying those on. Little kids will be most likely be the ones having to take on the Chain Gang Walk as they slip into those little summer shoes so their mothers and grandmothers can make sure there is enough “growth” room at the toes. Teens might do it, but if so, it will be while they are shopping alone so no one can see them as they take on this very uncool action. For some of those unlucky kids, the electronics department might be right next to the shoes. Social doom might be on the horizon and they would not even know it. Even some grown-ups have to do the Chain Gang Walk from time to time, and we can’t wait to get those little filament wires out of our shoes and into a recycle bin. Since Spring is here, don’t be too surprised if you lots of Chain Gang Walks in your local discount stores.
