ohnosecond – that very short moment in time during which you realize that you have pressed the wrong key and deleted hours, days, or weeks of work.
So, you did it. You are sitting there stupefied, not believing it, but there it is. More like, there it isn’t. Not any more. All that wonderful data you had gathered, those screenshots, those graphics, that presentation that was going to make you a star in your field, no matter what it might be. It’s gone. You have just experienced an ohnosecond, but it takes less than a second for it to happen. You will be sitting at your desk, blubbering the chant “ohno!ohno!ohno!” for hours until you can up with a plan to bring it all back. You are not sure why the ohnosecond occurred, or how it happened. You wonder of H.G. Wells had thought of a Time Machine that could go back, say… about five minutes, so you can stop yourself from making the same stupid mistake again. It’s so not fair, and no IT guy will be able to bring you back to where you lost what you had been working on. Ohnoseconds are dreaded, and hopefully avoidable, but just be very careful where that mouse might misclick. Make sure you are ready to hit that delete or enter key. The job you save may be your own.
