This racing game is one of the better ones that I have had the pleasure to play. It is for both the casual and avid racer with many different cars and track to race on. The game is literally all about the race with several different classes for the racer to work their way through. The graphics are stunning, Codemasters really outdid themselves with the making of this game. In many ways it is better than the Need For Speed games that are so popular and more enjoyable than Gran Turismo. The game is even multi player, if you want to play it that way.
Grid is a racing sim with realistic handling of the cars that you will drive. They even take damage as you proceed with the races. Don’t worry, you don’t have to fix them after every race, they are automatically repaired and ready to use for the next race. Being a racing sim you also have to manage your cars and eventually team mates. That’s right, you get to make your own 2 man racing team which will allow you to get even more prize money from the events that you participate in.
Each event is a series of race events and eventually one on one matches. Depending on what rank you are racing in will determine how many races are in each event. The higher ranked events you participate in, the more races are required to complete each event. Since the events are more than a single race, each driver will receive points for what position they place and finish the race in. The closer to first you finish, the more points you get. The one with the most points at the end of the event is the one that will win it all and the event prize money. Don’t worry, you can get sponsors that will pay you even if you don’t place, as long as you finish. Your car is a moving billboard to them, so as long as you don’t quit or get knocked out of the race, you still get some cash. Most sponsors, though, want a place or at least 5th place finish, so choose your sponsors well.
As you race you are also earning reputation points that allow you to progress to the higher ranked matches. You start out as a rookie driver, racing for other teams, but never part of a team. Once you have enough money to get your own car and prestige then you start racing for yourself. Once you advance you are able to even set up your own team with its own team name and livery that will have your sponsors plastered all over it. Once racing you have several views that you can use, each with their own challenges and perspectives. During the race there is not much to distract you than that of the other drives on the course. You get the raw sounds of the race and your pit boss telling you when there is a problem with your car and how you could handle it. It is a refreshing change to the way that other race games handle track racing.
This is one of the most addictive racers I have played in a long time. It is captivating, stunning and keeps you wanting to come back for just one more race. You get the real feel of the race without actually having to be in the car doing the racing. It is both challenging and in some ways even relaxing as you work your way up through the ranks of the US, European and Japanese circuits. The ultimate goal is to get into the World circuit for the really profitable and challenging races. This is one game that you just wont want to quit.
