The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is one of my more favorite films. With Sean Connery as Allan Quatermain in it why wouldn’t it be. It also stars Naseeruddin Shah as Captain Nemo, Peta Wilson as Mina Harker, Tony Curran as Rodney Skinner (An Invisible Man), Stuart Townsend as Dorian Gray, Shane West as Tom Sawyer and Jason Flemyng as Dr. Henry Jekyll. To be honest I don’t remember seeing any of the other actors till I saw LXG, but then I actually had to look up the names, all except Connery, for this review. I know I have seen this film at least half a dozen times or more and is definitely one of the films I am always re-watching.
Anyway, the film itself is rather dark in spots but when you are dealing with Mr Hyde and the bride of Dracula what would you expect it to be. I know that this movie is based somewhat on a graphic novel of the same name but I have not had the pleasure of reading it yet. It is a shame that the film didn’t do better at the box office because there really is nothing wrong with the film. It is highly entertaining and definitely has replay value. The real problem is that in the day, I know it wasn’t that long ago, and still today many of the critics think that if a film is not a tragedy or a dramatic film that would bore you to sleep or a romance that makes you cry that the film is then worthless. Well guess what you idiot critics, we like blow ’em up films. We like comedies, we like sci-fi that isn’t always correct. We like what we like and myself and I know others are tired of all of your misinforming drivel.
Right, back to the film. It is about how Allan Quatermain is contacted by emissaries from England. They want him to come back to England to lead a team that is going to try and thwart the evils of a man calling himself The Phantom. This film is full of mystery and intrigue and will keep you guessing until the end. If you are seeing it again you will still see things that you never noticed before. That is how good this film is even if you have watched it multiple times. It draws you in and takes you on a wild ride of excitement, betrayal and adventure that you want to experience again and again.
Even though this film is PG-13 it is not for the squeamish. You have a vampire and the creature Mr. Hyde in it as well as the infamous Captain Nemo. With just those three you know that there are going to be scenes that will both excite and frighten some people. True it is not as bloody as other films that keep coming out, but it does have its fair share of horror in it.
This film falls under many categories which is why some of the past critics criticized it so much. You have drama, mystery, sci-fi, magic, adventure, and even crime all rolled up into one serving of excitement. Forget anything that you have read about the film, if you have not seen it for yourself then you will have no way of knowing what this film is truly like. Be brave and get yourself a copy of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen today to see just how great this film is watch.
Many of you wanted images from the film so we added some screenshots from the DVD as well as images of posters available for the film. We added them Jan 13, 2011 just for you.
