Kobe Seafood & Steak Restaurant

As this is my first restaurant review for Musings, I thought I start with a place that is tried and true, and never ceases to deliver. Kobe Seafood & Steak Restaurant on 23rd St. in Panama City is one our favorite dining out spots, and conveniently located right down the street from the Carmike 10 Cinemas and the Regency 11 Theaters. Combine this with Kobe, and you are set for the dinner and a movie outing.

Kobe features all kinds of exotic drinks, and your old cocktail favorites, plus sake in different flavors, served hot or cold. The appetizers are commonly known, like tempura and gyoza, plus the sushi is just incredible! I recommend highly the black and green dragons, especially to those who love their sushi with a Caribbean flair. Kobe takes the best of Japanese and Florida and brings them together in a taste that locals and those stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base love, and the tourists can brag home about. The feature also the standard hibachi four-course meal, from fish soup to a spiced banana dessert. The seafood is always fresh, and the steaks are as good as they can get. Add some rice, steamed or fried, and some fresh veggies, and you’ll be very satisfied.

The atmosphere is rather simple, not overly Asian or local, but an understated in between, which really does not distract from the reason why people keep coming back. The food and friendly people make it worth the trip from anywhere, and Miss Winnie and Larry always treat those whom they get to know as regulars as family, and welcomes them back every time. Amazing how you can find Southern hospitality in just about any kind of theme when the people who work there know what it is and how to do it right, and they sure do it right at Kobe.

Sadly, with gas prices keeping us from all going to the places we really want to go to these days, trips to Kobe from Chipley are a rare and special treat these days, but we look forward to them when we can get them, because we will be treated well, and even have some leftovers that taste just as good when fried up in our own wok the next day. Kobe leftovers don’t last very long. Also, if you can tote it home, get a quart of miso soup to heat up for traditional Asian breakfast of miso soup, rice, fish and hot sake some weekend. It’s very refreshing, and worth bringing home.

Kobe Seafood & Steak Restaurant is located at 2727 West 23rd Street in Panama City, FL 32405-2341. You can contact them at (850) 215-6688 to learn more. If you are making a trip to Panama City Beach in the near future, head east over the St. Andrews Bridge into Panama City,on to 23rd St., and enjoy some great local Asian flavor. You may find yourself wanting to go there often, but don’t deny yourself the other great locally owned restaurants on Florida’s Emerald Coast, because there are so many!
