I was a bit wary of trying out this game, since the first Jar of Marbles was such a let down, but I really enjoyed the sequel much more. Jar of Marbles II: Journey to the West brought with it a great tie-in to a classic Chinese legend, and a far more challenging game. This was no ordinary marble popper. There was strategy involved, and your moves had to be precise, and quick, since each level was timed. We were not stuck using the same old jars or marbles. In the jar were blue marbles with jigsaw puzzle pieces on them, and whenever one of these match 3 sets were eliminated, it gave us another puzzle piece to find an animal that was part of the legend. I did not play long enough to find the Monkey King, but if anything, this game did make me want to read the old tale of Journey to the West again.
Jar of Marbles II: Journey to the West is a far superior game to its prequel, and if the developers keep on this track, then this series could live on for a long time, and I look forward to seeing what other stories they might bring into it. Don’t even bother with Jar of Marbles, and go straight to this game, because you will enjoy it so much more. Along with those little puzzle pieces, you will also find tools like bombs to ease the popping of the marbles, and hourglasses to slow down the timer. Pop as many of these as you can to get the upper hand, and help monk Sansang find the Monkey King and the Dragon Prince.
