Here’s a simple recipe for an amazing sweet and sour dip sauce that will blow away any from the grocer’s or restaurants. This is one of the recipes from our refrigerator door that gets used often. Takes hardly any time to make, too. Prep it up with some chicken tonight!
Grapefruit Sweet and Sour Dipping Sauce:
1/4 cup freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 plain rice vinegar
1/2 cup water
1/4 soy sauce
1 tbsp tomato paste
1/8 tsp red chili flakes
3 1/4 inch slices of ginger root
1 tbsp + 2 tsp tapioca starch
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Whisk to combine. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside. Remove ginger root before serving. Makes 2 cups.
Most of the ingredients can be found in the Asian foods and produce section of your local grocer. This versatile sauce can be used as a glaze or dip, and works perfectly for most tropical dishes like Coconut Shrimp or Coconut Chicken. For variations and some extra sweetness, try using 1/4 cup red grapefruit and 1/4 cup pineapple juice, or mango nectar, or any other tropical fruit juices you like. You can add some lime for a more Carribbean taste, or maybe some cayenne pepper for a hotter, Indonesian kind of flair. You’ve got the basics, now go with it.
