Galaxy Quest has to be my most favorite parody and spoof of Star Trek ever. This film features the talents of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell and Justin Long. Director Dean Parisot must have had some real fun when he was filming this one with a cast like this.
Its about 20 years after a somewhat popular scifi show had been canceled but the show still has fans. The cast of the show now plays the con circuit and living off of the patronage of the fans as well as promotionals when they can get them. Some go with the flow while others just want to whine and complain, just like the robot from Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Marvin. Just realized that Alan did the voice for that ‘bot, guess we know where they got the idea to use him from.
At the convention that we see in the opening of the film a group of aliens show up that are disguised as being human. They believe that the cast is the actual crew and the show was actually a real representation of an actual ship. They have come to seek the Commander’s help in ridding their race of a troublesome general that is hell bent on completely wiping out their entire race. It is now up to the crew of the Galaxy Quest to see that this threat is eliminated before they themselves are eliminated.
This is a fun family film that has something for everyone. You have romance in the end between Jason Nesmith and Gwen DeMarco. You even have a cross species relationship and more between Laliari and Fred Kwan. You see how people can and will work together to solve problems and the conflicts that are along the way. You have great comedy in a high tech sci-fi fantasy setting that many of us would give our eye teeth to experience. I think I will go watch it again, see you later Questerians.
