If you watched some great syndicated shows during the late 1980s and early 90s, then you most likely did not miss seeing one of the best horror shows to hit prime time or late night TV on the weekends. Friday the 13th, which had nothing to do with Jason Voorhees, and was more in keeping with the true legend of Friday the 13th, really pushed the envelope back in the day, and the crew was able to produce some truly disturbing episodes in its run from 1987-1990.
The show featured three co-workers at an antique shop in what was supposed to be in Chicago, but if you’ve seen enough of these types of shows, you will most likely recognize various Toronto landmarks throughout the series. When two cousins, Micki Foster (Louise Robey) and Ryan Dallian (John D. Lemay), inherit an antique shop, they find out it that the relative, Lewis Vendredi (R.G. Armstrong), whom owned it was a Satanist, and had sold cursed items. Now, they along with a very learned ex-colleague of Lewis’, Jack Marshak (Chris Wiggins), they are on the hunt to bring back the cursed items. Some are found locally, some are far away, and some have nothing to do with Satanic curses and come from ancient pagan cultures that existed before Christianity started. If you have ever seen the Syfy show, Warehouse 13, Friday the 13th really has much more in common with it. It is an artifact hunt, pure and simple, and treasure hunting for supernatural objects never goes out of style.
While this does feature much of the pop culture from the time, like the big hair, and synthy pop music, it stays true to its purpose in doing its best to scare you to pieces on a dark Friday night, with minimum blood and gore, but lots of grainy filters and dark secrets. It is truly worth a look, even if the show is more than a quarter century old. Over the three seasons, it featured many stars we still see now in various TV shows which feature a horror/fantasy genre. Someday, you need to join the hunt with Micki, Ryan, and Jack throughout the country, sometimes on the sea, and even through time, as they try to find all the cursed items Lewis sold. You will have a great time doing it!
