The final piece will make him a God.” That’s the tagline, and it sets up the plot in one sentence. This anime movie features the characters from the well-loved Neo-Geo fighting arcade game, Fatal Fury. Everyone is here, Terry and Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi,
Mai Shiranui, Kim Kaphwan, and an appearance by the late Lily McGuire. Our heroes are about to go on an adventure to stop a young man bent on revenge from those that had done his family wrong. Laocorn Gaudeamus and his sister, Sulia, are descendants of a great warrior from the Greek isle of Rodos (Rhodes), Gaudeamus. Laocorn and Sulia’s father was murdered by a business colleague, and Laocorn had been bent on revenge ever since.

The story opens at the ruins of Alexandria, where Cheng Sinzan and his team are searching for pieces of the Armor of Mars. After they find a shinguard, Laocaorn shows up with his three henchmen. They are people with elemental powers. Jamin controls fire, Panni controls water, and Hauer, whom controls air.

All our heroes are gathered in Japan to watch Joe at a kickboxing tournament. He wins, and there is fun celebration afterwards until the party is crashed by an strange masked creature. The first to take on this creature is Kim, but when he is defeated, the other get in on the action. Once the monster is taken down, then recoginized it to be Cheng Sinzan, an archeologist. During all this confusion, they run into Sulia, who has come to Japan to find Terry. Once she convinces the team to help her stop Laocorn, they head back to Rodos where Sulia fills them in on the information to find the armor, and how there is a connection Alexander the Great. This hunt will take them in many places in Asia and Europe to hunt down the Armor of Mars, and even when they reach the places that were found on a secret ancient map, they find that some pieces have been moved since Alexander’s day due to wars and theft. During this hunt, Terry develops a relationship with Sulia, and it seems she might just be the one to help him forget about the death of Lily

Laocorn keeps up appearances to continue with his quest by making investments to keep his operation going, and soon there is a showdown, but once Laocorn gets the armor and uses it to keep the Bogard team at bay, he is possessed by the original owner of the armor, Mars himself. With the magical combined forces of Sulia and Terry, they are able to stop the God of War from coming to take on this modern world.

This is a fun anime from the 90s, when the medium was still a bit hard to find in the U.S., but most everyone knew of the Neo-Geo Games of the same title. It is non-stop action with some fun breaks in between for some romance and drama. A balanced mix of martial arts, magic, and mystery, and that just can’t be beat, even by the Roman god of war.

I give this film a Musing review of ★★★★☆☆
