Director by Joseph Ruben and staring the talents of Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer and Kate Capshaw. This film is one wild ride through the dreams and nightmares of a little boy and the President of the United States. This film keeps you on the edge of your seat even though it was first produced in 1984. Many today feel that if a film is that old that it just wont be good to see, I say bull as this film is definitely good to see. It was sure as hell better then Inception.
This film deals with the mind and the demons that are buried deep inside ourselves and how we deal with them. Dreams are how most people work through their problems in their sleep and usually feel rested and inspired when they wake up. What happens when you only have nightmares? What happens when you are just too afraid to go to sleep? That are some of the questions that the researchers at Bates Hall are trying to find out as well as find a way to get into those dreams so that they can help those troubled individuals.
The film takes place at a time when the world is afraid of disarmament, that it would leave the world vulnerable to global nuclear attack. That sure is the the theme of the nightmares that the President is having, played by Eddie Albert. He is so afraid of nuclear attack and holocaust that it is all that he can dream about so he is on a quest to sign a treaty with Russia so that both countries can disarm. That was really a truly horrific idea for that time when the film was released. Using an idea like that truly did cause people nightmares and they wanted a way to feel safe.
So that is the setup, now add in a corrupt CIA agent who wants to see the cold war continue, add in a gambling psychic that can never loose and an idealistic researcher out to save the world. There you have your 3 main characters and true to the time throw in a stunningly beautiful assistant and you have the makings of one hell of a film.
This film will have you wanting to see it over and over as it really never gets old. If you never thought that going into someone else’s dreams and having some kinky fun then you wont like this film. If your a voyeur deep inside that just loves to step in at the right moment then this is definitely a film for you.
