For those with a food allergy you know just how difficult they can be when going to the store to shop for groceries. For those with a corn sensitivity or a corn allergy it makes you want to cry when you go to the store. You see all the foods that you ate when you were a kid and you can’t even be around them any more. Heck, corn alcohol is being used now for perfumes and cleaners which make things even worse. Its one thing to be allergic but when that allergy causes you to be afraid of shopping you know that there is a real problem going on. Back in the day when wheat allergies and peanut allergies were first starting to surface people would scoff at them. They would say that the person was just faking it or something. Sometimes they would say it was just to get attention or some kind of other food. No matter what in the end it was proven that those people did indeed have an allergy to those substances and food labels changed to reflect that. Now if they would just take us corn sufferers seriously and start listing things properly.

Sakura Mandarin Noodle House in Philadelphia

This past weekend, August 10th through 12th I was in Philadelphia for the Reform Party National Convention. While there I had the opportunity to eat at a wonderful place in the oriental district of the city, Sakura Mandarin. It is a local noodle house and restaurant on the corner of Race Street and 11th Street in downtown Philadelphia. Click here to see the location on Google Maps

When ever you are going to be someplace that you are not familiar with or have not visited for a long time the best way to find the best place to eat is to ask. I don’t mean asking the hotel or the information desk of the airport or train station. The very best way is to ask someone that is walking by that looks like they live in the area. When you ask them they will tell you what they think and not what someone was paid to say to recommend. A local, if you ask them nicely, is going to tell you the place they like to eat and might even give you some advice or input about the place. That is what I did when I first got off the train in Philadelphia, I asked a local, and they recommended Sakura.

What is wrong with America, An Opinion!

Many people say that the problem with America is the government or the schools, myself I think it is a total lack of respect for ones self and those that are around them. How do people get so apathetic? Easy, they just don’t care about anything other then themselves and sometimes not even that. I just ran into this face first at full speed and didn’t even know it till I was miles away with no way to turn around to fix the problem. I just had my order royally botched in such a way that I wasn’t even able to salvage the sandwich at all. Now it sites in the fridge waiting to take to another store to see if amends can be made.

Banana Sugar Cookies

This is an experimental variation of the Simply Vanilla Crispy Cookies, and they turned out to be very nice, indeed. Light tasting, not too sweet, great with afternoon tea, coffee, or tropical drinks.

1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 large banana or 2 small bananas, mashed
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg
2 cups self-rising flour

Disturbing Trend With Foods

Recently I have started to have a sensitivity to highly refined corn sugars, namely Dextrose and HFC otherwise known as High Fructose Corn-syrup. These highly refined products did not used to be in everything that we eat, it is only since the mid 90’s that we saw it show up more and more. Back then it was not such a big deal because it was only in a few things that we ate and they were consumed only occasionally. After the turn of the century though that all changed. It started to show up in just about everything that you eat and they told us that it was just another type of sugar that would be good for us, that it was less harmful then the other sugars.

Yeah, right….
