A few years ago, Disney and Red Om films treated us to quite a few American Girl movies as an annual treat during the holidays, and with this being Pearl Harbor Day, Musings decided to go with not only the WWII-themed appropro Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, but also one of the best of the American Girls movies in the series. If you are one whom is easily caught up in tears of happiness, confusion, and sometimes sadness, make sure you have tissues, paper towels, a dish towel, or even your pet cat close by to wipe your tears on, or else your collar will be wet by the time this eighty-five minute movie is over.

Battleship (2012) The Battle for Earth Begins at Sea

In 2005 we found a world that could sustain life. In 2006 we tried to contact them. In 2012 they came to visit us. That is the basic setup for this film that is based off an old classic game called BATTLESHIP. In the game you are not able to see the opponents board but you both have the same number of assets in play. Each turn the player will select a point on a grid to see if they hit a ship or not. If they do hit they insert a red peg into that point to signify a hit. It takes several pegs to totally sink a battle ship. The movie, while a science fiction film, does follow that premise in how the battles are fought. The big difference is that when a ship is sunk you get to see spectacular explosions that send bits and pieces of ships all over the ocean. They are massive explosions and actually proportional to the rounds and charges that are being used. We even get to see a real battleship from times gone past enter the fight to save the day.

One man who is fighting against his demons must rise above himself to not only save himself but an entire nation as well that isn’t even his own. It is just before the Civil War and during the American Indian Wars that one man whose deeds and what he has seen hunts him. Hi has nightmares about the past and what it did to him, so bad are the memories that he has taken to drinking constantly to try and drown them out. Not only do they haunt his sleep but they haunt his every waking moment as well. He knows no peace and in some ways feels that he doesn’t even deserve any peace, such is the life of Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise)

Gettysburg – Same Land. Same God. Different Dreams. All Heroes.

In 1993 a film came out that shocked the senses with its imagery and sheer brutal action sequences. There were no computer enhanced sequences, not glorified blood splattering, it was raw vivid showing of what war is. The battle scenes were so graphic that it brought many to tears and many to loose their lunch as well. It showed just how horrible war was. What it also showed was how brave soldiers can be when forced with knowing that they might not live the day. The film showed the courage that men face when they think that they are going to die yet go ahead anyway. This one battle was not wanted by either side yet it was going to happen no matter what they wanted. It was the bloodiest and most carnal battle of the Civil War and I do not believe that any other film has captured it as well as this one has.

Captain America: The First Avenger

This was the last movie in a chain of prequels leading up to this summer season’s first blockbuster, The Avengers. It seems appropriate that The First Avenger would be the last to be brought into play. What is really amazing about this particular Marvel film is that critics just never seemed to get enough of it, and after watching it a few times now, I can completely agree with them.

It seems we can’t go a few months these days without seeing a trailer for some comic book-based movie. From the standards of Marvel or DC, to lesser known houses, like Dark Horse, or various manga outlets, like Shojo or Tokyopop, we are constantly seeing our heroes come to life in live or computer-animated action. Some people might even be lucky enough to see these 2D stories in vivid real 3D, not only in movies, but in video games as well. So, we go from there, 2012 back to there, where it all started, in New York, 1942, and learn about the story of a small man with big dreams that made them come true with some good faith, brave deeds, and lots of secret government funding.
