This movie came out eight years ago, but it is amazing how we missed it. Fox Searchlight Pictures has tons of great movies like this, and if you ever see their trailers on your Blu-Rays or at the theater, make sure you check them out. So on with the show…

Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page) is living anything but a blissful life in Bodeen, Texas. At 17, she’s a high-school senior who works as a waitress at a local BBQ restaurant, and works to keep her mother happy in a string of beauty pageants that she finds to be useless. Her mother, Brooke Cavender (Marcia Gay Harden) is a former beauty queen that wants her daughters to follow her 1950s lifestyle example, but Bliss and her best friend, Pash (Alia Shawkat) know they are modern girls ready to bust out of Bodeen. Bliss is into indie rock and rollerskating could care less out her silly pageants, and one day, when shopping in Austin at a punk store/headshop for shoes, Bliss sees four rough-looking ladies with multi-coloured hair roll in on their skates to post an ad for the opening match for the Women’s Austin Roller Derby League, and they represent the team known as the Hurl Scouts. After learning a little more about the derby, Bliss and Pash find a way to sneak up to Austin and see the action. Bliss is extremely intrigued when she sees the Hurl Scouts in action, and is leaving her mother’s beauty
queen dreams behind to become a speed demon on wheels.

Bring It On

While not one of the best movies of the 2000’s, Bring It On is fresh and gives us a glimpse into a world many of us would not consider looking into. That of cheerleading. This story focuses on the cheer squad of Rancho Carne High School in San Diego. The El Toros have won the national cheerleading championships for five years straight. They are so good that no one ever comes to the games to see the teams they cheer for, just them. Even the the band perks up when they come on to the field. This year, the new captain is Torrence Shipman (Kirsten Dunst), and she is confident that she will not have any problems taking the team to their sixth victory, since she will be doing the routine that was created be the former captain, Big Red (Lindsay Sloane) had put together. Big Red had lead them to quite a few consecutive national championship wins, so it would be easy enough to take what was already set for the next win. Torrence is in for a very rude awakening when she loses one of her squad members, Kasey (Rini Bell) to a pyramid accident, and she needs to be replaced. After some very interesting tryouts, and some cheer snobbery by Courtney (Clare Kramer) and Whitney (Nicole Bilderback), who were both pushing to get Whitney’s slightly slutty little sister on the Toros squad, Torrence overrules everyone and chooses an accomplished gymnast with an attitude, Missy Pantone (Eliza Dushku), as the new member. Torrence has support on her decision from two of the male cheerleaders on the squad, Jan (Nathan West) and Les (Huntley Ritter), because they see Missy as a positive asset to the squad.

A fun romantic comedy that involves hot butts in the air that are covered in tights and on the ice. This film is all about the ups and downs of the world of skating, notably the world of pairs figure skating. Even though this is most definitely a chick flick is is still great for the guys with all the hot skaters in all those mini skirts. So this film has it for the women with the budding romance and self discover and for the guys you get legs and butt in your face and even some sports action thrown in for good measure. This is a film that is excellent for couples to share together.

Mystery Alaska is an often overlooked film that is of tremendous quality staring Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds and Hank Azaria. The film is full of compassion, adultery, comedy, loose women, pride, civic duty and extreme love for each other. It is a movie about a hockey team in a small town in norther Alaska that has been playing a Saturday game for years on end. They play against members of the town and the town elders pick who will be on the teams. This time things are changing, the ice they play on is changing, the rules they play by are changing and they are going to be playing the New York Rangers, a professional hockey team. This one game has the potential to destroy the lives of the whole town.

Death Race 2

Death Race 2 DVD CoverThis isn’t your Death Race 2000 nor is it Jason Statham as Jensen Ames, this is the birth of Frankenstein. As you can tell this is a prequel to the hit film Death Race, a story about the prison system going corporate and doing anything and killing everyone for a buck. If you want a comedy go watch Caradine in Death Race 2000 where they are selling everything off to pay off the nation debt.

In DR2 you have a 20 year veteran of driving for various bank jobs and heists. In this one it goes as wrong as it can get. He gets identified, he sees his bosses nephews men killed and he kills a cop by reflex, something that he did not want to do. He never once tried to get out of the crime he just rolls with it and winds up at Terminal to do his time. Little does he know that his boss wants him dead and some crazy cut throat media executive woman wants him as the star attraction.
