The Wizard (1989) It’s more than a game…

The-Wizard-1989-Movie-PosterIt’s the chance of a lifetime, as the poster says. It is also true for this film about 3 youths that are on a quest to get to Video Armageddon so that they can win $50,000 dollars. The film is more than just that, as most films from the 80’s, it is about the growth of friendships, dealing with heartache and loss as well. This film comes from a time where everything happening was new and people actually reveled in having fun. The gaming industry was young and everything 8 bit was the coolest thing under the sun. The film also gave a big boost to Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. 3, that was released after the move showed in the States. In all it was a fun film for kids and the parents that wondered what their children were doing all the time on that grey box hooked up to the TV.

Godzilla (2014) The world ends, Godzilla begins

Godzilla-2014-Movie-PosterThis new and reimagined creature of Godzilla is a mastery of story telling and CGI combined. Gone is the rubber suit that made Toho famous. Now we have a monster that is more bear than cat. Even though more of the fights are CGI, the film still stays true to the feel of the battles that Toho made famous with the King of Monsters. Some might not like the new ‘Zilla but other than it being more bear like instead of cat like, I like the new beast and this reviewer feels that so will others, given a chance.

The film opens up with a backdrop of nuclear testing in the ’50s. Even the credits that roll are interesting if you actually read them before the redaction sequence. Ones like the examples here are quite amusing:

Reliability of these sightings is still questionable based on the character witness. One must ask, is “Godzilla” owned and created by TOHO CO., LTD.

And another interesting one:

Logan’s Run: The only thing you can’t have in Logan’s world is your 30th birthday. Unless you run away. (1976)

Logans-Run-1976-VHS-CoverThe trend in movies about dystopia seems to come and go, and 70s sci-fi was full of them. From A Clockwork Orange in 1968 and on into the 80s with 1984 in 1984, it was a unique perspective to see into a world that might be far more idyllic, yet full of chaos at the same time. Even now, we are still seeing this with newer films like Divergent and The Hunger Games franchise.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier – In heroes we trust

Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Blu-Ray-Fron-CoverThis film is not only action packed but filled with drama and character building that we have come to expect from the Marvel franchise. The story draws you in and doesn’t let go, not even at the end. You see more than just the shield toting Captain America, we get to see Steve Rogers as a human being having to deal with the same things that veterans have to each and every day. True he does have some gifts that let him cope but he is dealing with them on a day to day basis as each vet must.

Spaceballs : May the schwartz be with you. (1987)

Spaceballs-1987-Blu-ray-Front-Cover“Once upon a time warp in deep space, the struggle between the nice & the rotten goes on…” starts the rolling introduction to this pop culture spoof on mainstream sci-fi movies, from Star Wars to Planet of the Apes and even Heavy Metal, no one is safe! Featuring a galaxy of stars and veterans from many of the movies in the Mel Brooks franchise, this never movie never ceases to keep up from laughing from beginning to end. Mel Brooks stars as the bumbling President Skroob of planet Spaceballs, as well as the wise alien sage, Yogurt. Skroob and his incompetent henchmen, Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) and Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis). The people of Spaceballs have polluted their air so heavily that they intend to invade the beautiful, peaceful planet of Druidia to steal their fresh air. The thing is, Druidia has its atmosphere locked down, so the Spaceballs are going to have to do something seriously treacherous to get them to open the sky shield.
