Trolls (2016) Find your happy place

This entry was posted in Animated, Comedy, DVD, Videos & Movies, Family, Fantasy, Music by Snowfoxx on

Dreamworks keeps coming up more and more great family movies, and although Trolls is not quite as immersive as Sing, it has its own charm and lots of colourful 1970s nostalgia mixed in. Anyone growing up in the era will understand many of the references the Trolls and their enemies, The Bergens come across along the way.

These trolls are not the kind one fights in Middle Earth, nor are they the kind that get loose in the basement at Hogwarts. These are very different. These are tiny, happy creatures based on toys created by the Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam in 1959. Now they are their own nation, and sadly, that tiny tribe lives in a park in the center of a Bergen town, only to be harvested for a festival every year know as Trollstice. On this day, Bergens get to indulge in a feast of happiness that comes from consuming Trolls. This particular Trollstice is the first one for the new Bergen Prince Gristle Jr.(Christopher Mintz-Plasse), but the prince will never learn how to be happy, because this is also the night that Troll King Peppy (Jeffrey Tambor) gets everyone out of the captive park, and to a new home far in the forest. They live peacefully for twenty years, and soon the Troll princess, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) is learning how to be a royal for the time when she takes the throne.

Welcome to the Moon Theater, located in an humanoid animal populated version of L.A., owned now by the koala Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), and impresario that loves his job more than anything, and has dreamed of nothing but making audience happy since he was a kid. As for now, many years of questionable shows and low attendance has taken a toll on Buddy, but he does not want to give up his dream. His only two supporters are his secretary, Miss Crawly (Garth Jennings), an ancient alligator with a twitchy glass eye, and Eddie (John C. Reilly), a sheep whose family has been in the theater business for decades. Eddie’s a slacker, and lives in the family pool house.

Sniglet of the Day: March 26

Sniglet Of The DayCorntamination – Corntamination occurs when GMO crops grow near organic crops, and somehow those things non-GMO consumers thought were safe turn out to have traces of the nasty stuff in them. This is especially for those whom have allegies to GMO crop like corn or soy, or other Frankenfoods (another Sniglet for another day…). When a person allergic to GMOs get these things in their systems, they will become cranky, bloat up, and complain for days about how whomever made the dish they thought was safe tried to poison them.

Some days reading labels is just not enough, and you never know when corntamination might occur, especially in countries that have given their lives over to Monsanto and Cargill. As much as some of these allergy sufferers would love to move to a place when GMOs have been banned, the economy keeps them at home, at the whim of the corporations that are out to poison not just them, but all of us, just slowly. Even finding out that many items on the Corn-Allergens list might give one some bad reactions, and finding ways to avoid them can be done, one can still not escape corntamination, at least in North America. Good luck out there, allergy sufferers. Now that the corporations are finding new ways to dig their claws into Washington, you need to be more wary than ever.

Celtic Culture in The Panhandle

This entry was posted in General Musings by Snowfoxx on

When spring hits the Florida Panhandle, we often get invaded by college students looking for some warm days on the beach and hot nights in the clubs, like La Vela, Spinnaker, and Sharky’s. Another group that invades the area are the Scots and their kin that love to show off their island culture at many of the Highland games that start their national tours in Florida. This past week, Cleave and I were able to go to two events celebrating Celtic heritage, one, in Panama City Beach, was the Celtic Heritage Alliance’s 25th Annual Panama City Scottish Festival and Highland Games.

This was a fun time not only featuring really big dudes in kilts throwing hammers, stones, and cabers, but lots of Clan information centers, vendors setting all kinds of bonnets, kilt pins, and Scottish fashions, and some caterers featuring foods like Scotch Eggs and Rumbledethumps. There was even rugby!

Whip It : She’s the hottest thing on eight wheels.

This movie came out eight years ago, but it is amazing how we missed it. Fox Searchlight Pictures has tons of great movies like this, and if you ever see their trailers on your Blu-Rays or at the theater, make sure you check them out. So on with the show…

Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page) is living anything but a blissful life in Bodeen, Texas. At 17, she’s a high-school senior who works as a waitress at a local BBQ restaurant, and works to keep her mother happy in a string of beauty pageants that she finds to be useless. Her mother, Brooke Cavender (Marcia Gay Harden) is a former beauty queen that wants her daughters to follow her 1950s lifestyle example, but Bliss and her best friend, Pash (Alia Shawkat) know they are modern girls ready to bust out of Bodeen. Bliss is into indie rock and rollerskating could care less out her silly pageants, and one day, when shopping in Austin at a punk store/headshop for shoes, Bliss sees four rough-looking ladies with multi-coloured hair roll in on their skates to post an ad for the opening match for the Women’s Austin Roller Derby League, and they represent the team known as the Hurl Scouts. After learning a little more about the derby, Bliss and Pash find a way to sneak up to Austin and see the action. Bliss is extremely intrigued when she sees the Hurl Scouts in action, and is leaving her mother’s beauty
queen dreams behind to become a speed demon on wheels.
